Wigan 16-34 Huddersfield: Six-try Giants stun Warriors to dash perfect Super League record

Struggling Huddersfield produced a sensational performance to defeat Betfred Super League leaders Wigan 34-16 at the Brick Community Stadium.

Giants sacked head coach Luke Robinson last weekend after losing their opening five league matches, while Wigan went into the match with a perfect record at the top.

But, with assistant coach Liam Finn in temporary charge, Huddersfield ran in six tries to record a comprehensive victory.

It was a historic day for 29-year-old Tara Jones, who, in the week she received an MBE for her services to the sport, became the first woman to referee a men's Super League game.

She was a central figure early on, with Liam Farrell denied a try for offside, and from there Huddersfield took over, running in three tries in 15 minutes through Jacob Gagai, Tanguy Zenon and Niall Evalds.

The second was initially ruled out for a knock on but, after a lengthy review, Huddersfield's captain's challenge was deemed successful.

Wigan finally got on the board a minute before the break, Zach Eckersley diving over, and the Warriors applied intense pressure at the start of the second half, only for Jacob Douglas to run over in the corner for Huddersfield's fourth try.

Connor Wrench marked his debut with the fifth soon afterwards and, although Jack Farrimond crossed for Wigan, Adam Clune finished off a stylish break down the left.

Wigan scored the final points through a try from Farrell but it was a chastening afternoon for the leaders.
