Newcastle injected life into their bid to secure European qualification with a 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Anthony Gordon's first-half strike (18) proved to be the only goal of the game as Newcastle produced a textbook away performance to seal what could be a vital three points in the race for Europe.
Tino Livramento's pass split open the Chelsea defence, allowing Joe Willock to run in on goal. The midfielder went on to tee up Gordon, who was able to tap home the winner.
The performance was the perfect tonic ahead of their trip to Barcelona in midweek as victory sees Eddie Howe's side move up to ninth, six points behind fifth-placed Chelsea with eight games of the season remaining.
Chelsea dominated the ball for large spells but could find no way through Newcastle's rock-solid defence. Substitute Liam Delap wasted a good chance before Reece James' late free-kick thumped the post as Chelsea's bad week continued.
This was a chance for Liam Rosenior's side, who lost 5-2 to PSG in midweek to all but end their Champions League hopes, to move into third with a win, but they never really had the urgency to trouble Newcastle as they went on to suffer an eighth defeat of the season.
With Man Utd facing Aston Villa, live on Your Site on Super Sunday, defeat represents a big opportunity missed in the race for Champions League qualification. They remain three points behind both Villa and United having played a game more.
Eddie Howe, speaking to Your Site, was full of praise for Newcastle's defensive performance at Stamford Bridge:
"I think the defensive mentality was incredible today, especially off the back of a massive week for us. I thought we were really good off the ball and in every respect, we pressed well first half, we were better deeper second half, and we rode our luck at times but I think, the amount of times we've been hurt this season, I think we more than deserved it.
"We haven't defended well enough this year. I mean, that's a first clean sheet in a long time. But today, we stood up, and we've defended really well at times."
Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior reflects on the defeat to Newcastle:
"The result isn't the one we wanted. We just lacked the cutting edge today. At the moment, the lads aren't getting what they deserve. We need to find ways to have more quality in the final third.
"In the first 15 minutes we found Cole [Palmer] and Joao [Pedro] in really good positions. The goal knocked the wind out of our sails. Football's about momentum and that goal gave them momentum.
"We tried to find a tactical solution rather than a personnel solution, and we didn't do that this evening.
"Things aren't always as great as you think they are when they're going well, and things aren't always as bad as they are when you're going through a difficult spell. I can't remember Rob [Sanchez] having much to do.
"We need to make sure the players recover. We need to monitor them and see who's fresh [for PSG]."
Chelsea have been dangerous and creative in Liam Rosenior's reign so far, but this felt like the first signs where the project ran into a stubborn Newcastle wall.

When Chelsea can play through teams, they look electric. When the pitch stretches and transitions open up, their attacking players thrive. But when the game becomes condensed, the system can start to look a little one-paced.
Newcastle asked a simple question of Rosenior: what happens when Plan A isn't enough? Chelsea didn't have an answer.
